You may think of calligraphy as a form of writing because you use the letters of the alphabet from A to Z, but it is actually a form of art. Throughout history each and every nation has at one time or another developed their own style of calligraphy for their alphabet.
The definition of the word calligraphy is beautiful writing. The Romans had developed what we call books by folding parchment paper made from the skins of animals. The Monks in the Catholic Church developed the Gothic style when they started to write the Bible in calligraphy. At that time most reading was limited to the very wealthy and those of royalty, since most of the population was illiterate. The monks used a goose plume pen that they dipped in bottle ink to write with. At this time, the monks used parchment or vellum paper to write on. This method was very time consuming as the ink did not last very long on the plume pen. The monks that lived in Scotland and Ireland used the Uncial calligraphy style which is now known as the Insular style.
After the invention of the printing press the art of calligraphy was not used as much. But due to the fact that the printing press could not replicate all of the styles of calligraphy, with the help of artists around the world, calligraphy made its come back.
The Chinese developed the oriental style of writing which today is a very popular and beautiful style of calligraphy not only used for writing, but in their works of art as well. You will also find that Western calligraphy known as the Cyrillic writing system and Roman style are among some of the more popular modern styles that are used today.
Today calligraphy has been made simpler with the many different new and updated supplies. While the plume pen is still used, they now have the glass pen, ink pen, fountain pens, gel ink pens and many ranges of colors that you can use, either in ink bottles with holders for you pen on the top or refill cartridges for the many different styles of pen.
If you are interested in learning calligraphy you have many different methods to choose from. If you are hands on type of person you might want to take a calligraphy class from your local art or craft store. They usually offer classes for the beginner on up to the intermediate. You also have the advantage of having all the supplies that you need right at your finger tips.
Another way to learn calligraphy is by using calligraphy programs on your computer. Adobe Illustrator is a great program for creating calligraphy art. Illustrator has features that allow you to create calligraphy using an ink pen or a calligraphy brush. It also allows you to draw calligraphy pictures.
Of course, if you’re just not up to it or you’re pressed for time, you can always visit your local craft store, they usually have a wide selection of premade calligraphy to choose from.
